Has your driveway or gravel road experienced a washout due to the recent heavy rain, leaving behind an unsightly and sometimes dangerous washout?

We all appreciate the rain but unfortunately, bitumen roads and gravel driveways have not fared quite so well.

Washed out driveways can not only cause thousands of dollars in damage to your vehicle,
but can also potentially lead to accidents and serious injuries.

Mark Cuthel of Coastal Landscape Supplies, says that the key to ensuring your driveway does not get washed away in the next heavy downpour is in the base that is laid before a fresh cover of gravel is poured.

“Unfortunately, lots of people opt for a quick fix to the problem, and just have a load of gravel spread onto their driveway,” Mark said.

“In the short term, this is OK, and it certainly fills potholes and corrugation, but at the first big downpour, the whole lot gets washed away again, leaving you with the exact same problem,” he said.

“The best way to ensure that the problem is properly fixed is to make sure a base of 75mm is laid first.

“Then lay 25mm road base over the top, smooth the surface and then apply fresh gravel.

“You really don’t want to have to replace the gravel on your driveway every time there is heavy rain.

“I’ve seen the bottoms ripped out of vehicles which have been driven over washed out driveways, it becomes a very expensive problem.

“We can advise how much of the appropriate product you need to fix your driveway properly so that it isn’t a problem every time we get heavy rain.”
